Brand Icon Award – Montblanc

As someone who has always admired brands that embody craftsmanship, heritage, and just a touch of theatrical flair, I’ve long had a soft spot for Montblanc. Their distinctive white star emblem has adorned some of the finest writing instruments in the world for over a century. But it’s not just their product quality that earns them this month’s Giraffe’s Blog “Brand Icon” Award—it’s their ability to surprise, to serve, and to smile at themselves.

Earlier this year, I found myself on a nostalgic mission. In a drawer of much-loved relics, I came across a vintage Montblanc propelling pencil—sleek, black, gold-trimmed, and unfortunately not propelling! I wanted to see if it could be revived. So, I did what any fan of fine brands would do: on a visit down south, I took it to Montblanc’s boutique in Mayfair, London.

Now, let’s be honest—many luxury brands could (and often do) treat such visits with a raised eyebrow and a request for a repair fee large enough to finance a small dinner party. But happily not Montblanc. I was welcomed as if I had arrived with the latest limited edition $500k pen (yes they exist). They examined the pencil, took it upstairs and returned within ten minutes. “Fixed,” he said. “No charge.”

It was a small gesture, but one that spoke volumes. Here was a global brand that still understood the power of service—the sort of moment that turns casual customers into lifelong advocates.

My fondness for the brand however was last year enhanced further last year.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of its iconic Meisterstück pen, the brand released a short film in 2024 that surprised everyone—including, I suspect, their own board of directors. Directed in unmistakable style by Wes Anderson, it’s delightfully whimsical and it’s completely brilliant.

At a time when many heritage brands take themselves far too seriously, Montblanc gave us a wink. They dared to be playful. They invited us in not just to admire the craftsmanship but to enjoy the character. The result was something far more valuable—renewed emotional connection with an audience who love storytelling just as much as fine writing instruments.

It takes courage for a 100-year-old luxury brand to partner with Wes Anderson. It takes confidence to trust that your legacy can withstand satire. And it takes vision to know that today’s consumers—particularly younger ones—want more than just prestige. They want humanity, humour, and heart.

Montblanc has delivered all three.

That’s not to say their core values have changed. The company continues to make instruments of extraordinary quality. The Meisterstück remains a masterclass in precision engineering and understated luxury. Their ink still flows like poetry. But now, there’s a sense that Montblanc knows how to evolve—how to combine reverence for the past with relevance for the present.

For all of these reasons—and for fixing an old pencil without fanfare—Montblanc earns my Giraffe’s Blog “Brand Icon of the Month” Award.

Because great brands don’t just make great things.

They make you feel something, too.
